Around Venice in a Day
During the COVID-19 pandemic, travel restrictions were still in place, but I was able to take a trip to Italy with my wife, despite the challenging circumstances.
Italy had been heavily affected by the virus, but thankfully, no test was required to return home. We took the opportunity to visit Venice, a city with very few tourists at the time.
Even on a short holiday, I couldn't leave my bike behind, so I locked it in the car at the parking garage upon arrival. To make the most of my morning, I left the hotel at 4:30 am and took the first Vaporetto (water bus) to the parking area to prepare for my ride. By 5:45 am, I set off from the island to the mainland, Mestre, in the early morning darkness.
The first part of my ride was to Punta Sabbioni, where I planned to catch a boat to Venice Lido. The 30 km ride was mostly flat but included some rain and traffic. Once I passed Caposile, the roads improved, and I could ride on quieter routes. I was making good time, aiming to catch the 8:00 am boat, but just before Lido di Jesolo, I got a flat tire. Thankfully, I still had plenty of time to fix it and catch the next boat.
After some rain, the weather cleared up, and I continued on to Venice Lido. The flat terrain made for an easy ride, with the only "climb" being the 4th level of a parking garage. On my return, I took the ferry back along the southern side of Venice, enjoying the stunning views, including a glimpse of Piazza San Marco. It was a memorable and scenic ride, despite the challenges.
