Postalm

One of the most beautiful areas in Austria is the Ausseerland, with its stunning lakes. When the weather is nice, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy—including cycling.

This summer, Andrea and I decided to spend a few vacation days in Austria, staying at Lake Fuschl. We went on a few hikes and e-bike rides, but one day, we dedicated to a scenic road bike tour looping through the mountains around Wolfgangsee, Golling, and Salzburg.
The ride began from Fuschl, heading to St. Gilgen on the western side of Lake Wolfgang. Following the entire lake, I turned right at Weissenbach and started the climb to Pötsalm. It’s a beautiful ascent, starting at around 550 meters and climbing to 1,350 meters. The lower part is more gradual, but the gradient increases to an average of 7%, with sections reaching 12%.
The higher I climbed, the more I felt the freedom of the mountains. At the top, there’s a stunning 10-kilometer stretch of rolling terrain before descending into Abtenau. From there, I tackled another climb over to Golling and Hallein.
Instead of riding into Salzburg, I opted for a more direct route through the Almbach Valley, passing Lake Wiestal and joining the road back to Hof and Fuschl. Combined with perfect weather, it was an incredible day of riding.
